In preparation for Martin Luther King, Jr., students in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd listened and sang a song about Dr. King and his work. After having a class discussion about Dr. King and singing the song, they used rhythm sticks to play and move to the music. Students made connections between the work Dr. King using one stick pattern and used a second pattern to chant Dr. King's name. This activity utilized our pillars of Empathy, Inclusivity, and Experience.

Reminder! WCS is not in session on Monday, Jan. 16 for MLK Jr. Day. Did you know that Monday is a National Day of Service dedicated to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? Even though there isn't school, there are many opportunities to get involved and make an impact! Here are some family-friendly ideas, but we would love to hear some of your own. 1) Donate to a local food pantry 2) Perform random acts of kindness 3) Put together a care package for local/national service workers 4) Do some #plogging 5) Read to residents at a local nursing home 6) Volunteer at an animal shelter #wcsmission #togetherwearewarsaw #kindnesswcs

Merry Christmas!
The amazing third grade at Leesburg all came together in a celebration of Colombian culture! The children learned about the country of Colombia and how Christmas is celebrated including “Day of the Little Candles”. This tradition includes telling for whom you light the candle and lighting them in unity. They also experienced authentic and delicious Colombian arepas and danced the Cumbia. The presentation was given in both English and Spanish and the students presented their answers in both as well. What a wonderful celebration of honoring each other!

Leesburg second through fourth grade art students created watercolor paintings called "Sunsets and Sailboats". Students observed a demonstration showing how to mix water and pigment together for the correct consistency for a watercolor painting, while we reviewed the color wheel, and warm and cool colors. We discussed the positive vs negative effects that complementary colors can have on a painting. Students were shown how to hold and use a larger paintbrush to create horizontal lines in the sky and water and blend between colors for a realistic effect. Continuing into the second week, we reviewed the size and placement of the sailboats or pirate ships to appropriately show perspective, and discussed silhouettes prior to completing them in pencil and then finishing with Sharpie pens. Art terminology used: complement, horizontal, perspective, pigment, and silhouette.
