POSTED: December 5, 2024 This week, Mr. McCollom’s biology students got hands-on with an exciting lab, extracting DNA from strawberries! 🍓 Why strawberries? They’re perfect for DNA extraction because they’re octoploid—meaning they have 8 sets of DNA per cell, making it easier to see the genetic material. Through this lab, students explored key biological concepts, including: 🔹 Hydrophilic vs. Hydrophobic 🔹 Phospholipid Bilayer 🔹 Polar and Nonpolar molecules These terms are more than just vocabulary—they’re essential for understanding the foundations of biology. This hands-on learning is preparing students for next week’s semester exam, where they’ll apply what they’ve learned in the lab to real-world concepts. Thank you Mr. McCollom for sharing highlights from the lab - where science comes alive! #LakeviewInspires #wcsinpsires #LakeviewMiddleSchool #ScienceLab #FutureScientists #DNAExtraction #HandsOnLearning

POSTED: November 8, 2024 A huge thank you to Derek Pike and Dan Graney for planning and leading an impactful training on K-6 Computer Science Standards for our Digital Learning Specialists (DLS) and librarians! Yesterday’s professional development session provided valuable insights to support our DLS staff, who teach essential digital skills during library specials for K-6 students. These educators go above and beyond, delivering lessons in cyber safety, coding, keyboarding, and computer science alongside the American Association of School Libraries (AASL) standards. Our team of 8 dedicated DLS professionals is making a profound impact across our schools, which include 4 STEM, 2 DLI, and 2 Leadership elementary schools. Their work ensures that students not only meet but exceed foundational computer science skills. Here are two core areas where they’re helping students excel: Digital Citizenship & Cyber Safety: Our DLS staff emphasize strong, ethical online behaviors, guiding students on how to protect personal information and practice responsible digital habits. Coding and Data Analysis: By introducing students to the basics of coding and data visualization, our DLS team is building a foundation in computational thinking and preparing students to analyze data effectively. In alignment with the AASL standards, our DLS team also nurtures essential skills, such as: Inquiry and Curiosity: Encouraging students to ask questions and seek diverse perspectives, building a strong foundation in research and information literacy. Collaborative Learning: Promoting teamwork and effective communication to help students work productively and respect diverse viewpoints. Information Evaluation: Guiding students in assessing the accuracy and credibility of information sources to develop lifelong critical thinking skills. We’re incredibly grateful to our DLS staff for reading to our students from an early age, fostering a love of literature, and creating warm, inviting libraries that serve as vibrant community spaces. Their dedication makes a meaningful difference in our students' lives. Here’s a special shout-out to each member of our outstanding DLS team: Claypool STEM: Amy Smith Eisenhower DLI: Trishelle Burchett Harrison Leadership: Jeanne Conley Jefferson STEM: Donna Propp Leesburg DLI: Mandy Mahan Lincoln Leadership: Athena Deck Madison STEM: Sara Heckaman Washington STEM: Fabiola Nunez The foundational skills taught by these dedicated educators feed into our two middle schools and continue to grow at the high school level. Thank you to Derek and Dan for your leadership and commitment to this vital work in computer science and digital literacy education. Together, we are preparing our students for a bright digital future! #thankalibrarian #Libraries #STEMeducation #DigitalLearning #CyberSafety #InspiringFutureGenerations #wcsinspires

POSTED: November 4, 2024 Huge Congratulations to Lakeview Middle School's powerhouse Science teacher, Mr. Mark McCollom, and his incredible 8th-grade students! This year, they achieved the ultimate milestone—a flawless 100% pass rate on the 10th-grade ILearn Biology Assessment! That’s right, every single student passed, with 6 earning proficiency and an astonishing 25 scoring above proficiency! Here’s to Mr. McCollom for his unmatched teaching, relentless encouragement, and for setting a new benchmark for success. And a massive shoutout to the 31 students who proved they’re not just ready for high school biology—they’re already excelling! Lakeview’s dedicated teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents make Lakeview Middle School an outstanding place to learn and grow.
